Supplement Watch - About Minerals
Minerals (also referred to as dietary minerals, mineral nutrients or dietary elements) are the chemical elements required by people excluding vitamins and carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen. The term "minerals" is used even though the minerals are more chemical elements rather than actual minerals.
An essential nutrient is a nutrient required for normal human body function that either cannot be synthesized by the body at least in the required amounts.
Essential nutrients are many times grouped in the following categories:
1. Fatty acids
2. Amiono acids
Please note that:
Not all fatty acids are are essential.
Not all amino acids are are essential.
Carbohydrates can be metabolized from amino acids!
Vtiamins by definition are always essential.
Minerals by definition as always essential.
Mineral, dietary minerals that is, are not actually minerals like quartz but rather chemical elements like chlorine which is usually in the form of chloride.
The same thing might be said about mineral that has been said for vitamins that there is little evidence of nutritional benefit in supplementing vitamins when one is on a balanced healthy diet and is otherwise healthy.
However like with vitamins the supplementation of minerals is important for the treatment of certain health problems. Also it might be important for athletes and people under stresfull situations.
In our opinion everyone should find out if they can benefit from supplements also regards to minerals.
It is always important to remember also that there is a definate and real possibility to supplement minerals too much resulting in overdose with possibly serious consequences.
