When you need more than just food

It is said that there is little evidence of nutritional benefit in supplementing vitamins when one is on a balanced healthy diet and is otherwise healthy. However supplementation is important for the treatment of certain health problems. Also it is important for athletes and people under stresfull situations.

When we talk about supplements we often think only about vitamin supplements but this is a very narrow view on supplements. Supplements are all of the substances that you consume in your diet other than the normal food that you consume. By normal food we mean vegetables, bread, fish, beef etc and by supplements we mean products that are manufactured to provide a certain substance or certain substances that you can add to your diet.

The line between food and supplement is not always clear. You can buy juices that are fortified with vitamins. Is it then food or supplement?

Some classes of supplements:

1. Vitamin and multivitamin supplements

2. Mineral supplements

3. Amino acid supplements

4. Other supplements

Here the vitamins, minerals and amino acids are quite self explanatory. Other supplements include a variety of different things including but not limited to herbal products.

Remember when dealing with supplements that using the definition we use of supplements it does not mean that a supplement is healthy. By definition you could supplement your diet with a deadly poison.
